Not every desire for fuller lips needs to be fulfilled with volume enhancement through hyaluronic fillers. If the lips are generally well-proportioned but appear too thin when speaking or smiling, a so-called "lip flip" may be a suitable alternative. In this procedure, the upper lip is subtly lifted and slightly turned outward using botulinum toxin (Botox). This gives the mouth more expression – without adding any additional volume.

Preparation

No special preparation is necessary. However, you should avoid wearing lipstick or skincare products on the day of treatment. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, please discuss taking a break with your doctor beforehand. This isn't strictly necessary in most cases, but it can reduce the risk of minor bruising.
The treatment
The treatment itself takes only a few minutes. After a brief disinfection, Dr. Christian Graß uses a very fine needle to inject a small amount of botulinum toxin into the area above the upper lip. The dosage is precisely tailored to your anatomy to achieve a natural effect and relax the muscles just enough to cause the lip to curl slightly outward.
The injections are generally painless, so Anesthesia is usually not necessary. You can leave the practice immediately after the procedure and resume your normal daily routine. Initial effects will be noticeable after a few days, and the full results will be visible after about ten to fourteen days.
Aftercare
Lip flipping doesn't require any recovery time. However, it's recommended that you avoid strenuous physical activity, heat sources such as saunas or tanning beds, and massaging the treated area on the day of treatment. You should also avoid applying makeup to the area for a few hours.
In the first few days after the procedure, it's important not to exert excessive strain or pressure on the lip area, as the botulinum toxin is still distributing itself through the tissue. Once fully effective, it typically lasts for three to four months. After that, the treatment can be repeated if desired.
Are there any risks associated with lip flipping?
Lip flipping with botulinum toxin is very safe when performed properly by an experienced physician such as Dr. Christian Graß. The doses used are extremely low, significantly reducing the risk of side effects. In rare cases, minor bruising, slight asymmetry, or a temporary change in muscle tone may occur—especially if the dosage is accidentally too high.
Since our Leipzig practice works exclusively with precision and individually adjusted dosages, undesirable side effects are extremely rare. Should an uneven effect occur, it can be corrected by readjusting the dosage or by waiting for the natural regression.
